MONKS – the alchemy of gin

Since the early Middle Ages, monks have been closely connected with the "spirit of life," alcohol. Whether through distillation, tending vineyards, or the art of brewing, monks have always been involved in developing or cultivating things that enhance life. This prompted South African-born master distiller and worldly man Nic Davis to brand his passion MONKS (Monks).

No less significant is its logo, which represents the ancient symbol for copper. This element is used in the traditional alembic, the still, the nucleus of a traditional distillation. In these, monks combined their herbs and spices like alchemists and extracted their beneficial effects on body and soul using alcohol.

In Worcester, about an hour's drive northwest of Stellenbosch, he built his small distillery and extracts great gins from juniper berries, coriander seeds, fynbos, and other herbs. MONKS distills three exceptional gin interpretations:"Mystery"gets its distinctive aroma from various Fynbos plants, particularly Buchu and Skeletium (Kanna), the “shrub of warriors”… its extracts make you “cheerful and courageous”.“Medella”(the middle child) – gets its character from the vitamin-rich and highly antioxidant blueberries that are omnipresent in the region. From one of the oldest plants in the world, hemp (cannabis), MONKS extracts the character of its“Mary Jane”Gin – based on a nickname for marijuana (although only parts of the female plants contain the addictive THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the male plants, however, contain the health-promoting CBD
(Cannabidiol)). Impressive background: Nic was cured of the "disease of a thousand faces" (multiple sclerosis) through hemp extract treatment (CBD).
