"Culinary Winter Finland"
authentic - culinary lockdown in ice, snow & solitude of the forests
Pure campfire romance ... Culinary Winter Camp – living by and from the wood fire in ice and snow in exclusive, authentic wooden cottages – a 7-day culinary outdoor experience in the heart of the snowy forests and island landscapes of the Saimaa Lake District with its 13,000 islands spread over 4,300 sq km of frozen water, about 35 km south of the small town of Savonlinna, on the 61st parallel in southeastern Finland.

On open wood fires, we celebrate freshwater fish caught under the ice, such as pike, trout, whitefish, perch, ide and crayfish, as well as elk, reindeer, capercaillie, wood pigeons, young boar and mallards from the surrounding seemingly endless birch, pine and larch forests.
In high-quality, traditional Finnish wooden huts, the seal huts (Norppa-Majat), we stage an authentic culinary winter wilderness journey in our “Winter Camp” on the small forest island of Pellossalo in the middle of the fish-rich Saimaa lake district – located directly on the water.
Camp accommodation
Each of our 5 exclusively furnished cabins is traditionally equipped with its own wood-fired Finnish outdoor forest sauna and an indoor sauna, both with direct access to the lake. No cabin is visible from any other. The focal point of each cabin is traditionally an open fireplace next to a wood-fired stone oven . Wood for fueling the fireplace, oven, sauna, and separate barbecue hut is also available in abundance – pre-cut and sawn in a dedicated wood storage hut. Free internet access is available throughout the camp.

Ice action
The forests amidst a seemingly endless frozen lake landscape invite you to snowshoe hikes, ice swimming, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing. On daylight and night hikes, with or without snowshoes, we roam deep forests and cross frozen lake trails, always stopping for campfires and enjoying wilderness lunches in wooden shelters—the "wild Scandinavian way."
Authentically Finnish
An essential part of Finnish culture is the sauna, a practice used to promote health and cleanse the body and mind. Each wooden cabin in our fishing camp has its own electric indoor sauna and a traditional wood-fired outdoor forest sauna .
All saunas are available day and night, and each cabin has ample birch and pine wood. Traditionally, sauna use in Finland is done in swimwear. During the infusions, blood circulation is stimulated by beating the skin with freshly cut, green birch twigs (vihtoja). Between our outdoor activities and over-the-fire cooking workshops, there's plenty of time for extended sauna sessions. Each cabin also has its own jetty, providing easy access to "your own" ice-water entry, freshly carved into the ice.

Life in the ice
We stage ice fishing for burbot, perch, and rainbow trout in the traditional way, using small hand rods. Using authentic fish traps and the "fyke net," we demonstrate traditional Finnish fishing methods. Any fish caught is immediately cooked over a wood fire. As always, all other catches are "catch & release."
Northern Lights
It's always an impressive spectacle when the Northern Lights appear over our camp. This spectacular natural phenomenon can most often be seen in March and September. In any case, it's an exercise in humility.
