The Fifth Quarter Style Safari

"Authentic Bush Südafrika"

A seven-day bush safari in the legendary “The Fifth Quarter” style on the banks of the mighty Olifants River, in northeastern South Africa, not far from the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Our exclusive, private bush camps are hidden away and unfenced in the Limpopo Province within the Balule and Sawong Nature Reserves, in the heart of the home of the iconic “Big Five.” Wild animals roam freely through the wilderness and cross paths with our camp life, bush braais, bush breakfasts, bush fishing, and game drives by day and by night—in open jeeps and private boats...

TFQ Camps on the Olifants River

Limpopo bush

Our authentic camps are situated in the Balule and Sawong areas, right on the mighty Olifants River, which flows year-round and is therefore vital to the flora and fauna of Limpopo Province.

We live in the open bush.

Thanks to this continuous water supply, our camps and the surrounding biosphere reserve offer fascinating wildlife sightings year-round in spectacular natural surroundings. The camp is intentionally fenceless; wild animals roam the campsites as part of their natural habitat—day and night.

We live by the rules of the wilderness!

Wonders of Nature

Respect & Distance

... and yet so close. The Fifth Quarter team is equipped with HIKmicro Habrok Pro HX60LN thermal imaging cameras, night vision devices and binoculars at all camps. This means you can observe animals not only during the day, but also in their natural, unobserved behaviour in the pitch-dark night. The thermal binoculars make animals visible even in daylight when we cannot see them with the naked eye due to their natural camouflage.

Kambaku & Baluleni

We bring “Authentic Bush” to life in various camps to showcase the South African bush in all its facets—always “off the beaten path”!

Kambaku is the Japanese word for “elephant” and also the name of one of the seven mightiest and largest elephants ever to have lived in the South African bush. The South African, family-run Kambaku Camp embodies the traditional South African way of life and “bush lifestyle.”

Baluleni meaning “a place where water flows.” “Baluleni” is not only a place dedicated to nature conservation and the protection of animal habitats in South Africa, but also a culinary hideaway in the heart of the South African wilderness. Here, the soul slows down and the body recharges. The camp pool provides both physical and mental refreshment and inspiration.

The Fifth Quarter Style Safari

Braai Boat

On the ‘Kambaku II’, our braai boat, we observe the wildlife from the Olifants River.

Chilled wine, ice-cold beer, South African fynbos gins, tonic and, of course, brandy and coke, the national drink of the Afrikaners – everything is on board. Roland prepares snacks in The Fifth Quarter style over a wood fire, breakfast or a complete braai feast during the night boat safari.

The Fifth Quarter Style Safari

Bush Cooking

Outdoor cooking, known as ‘braai’, is the order of the day – meals are prepared almost exclusively over an open wood fire – even on the wooden boat on the mighty Olifants River! Traditionally prepared regional meat, game, fish and shellfish from the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic coast, vegetables from local farms are served daily, all accompanied by a magnificent variety of wines from the Cape Wine Kingdom and South African fynbos gins.

Outdoor Regisseures

Leon & Roland, “soulmates” in their approach to nature and in showcasing the South African way of life. Leon is the owner of Kambaku 2 Lodge and Roland’s partner. With energy and a down-to-earth approach, the two convey their passion for wildlife, flora, South African history, and authentic bush cuisine—on the water along the Olifants River, on land in open jeeps, and in the air by helicopter or hot-air balloon.

We host bush braais, bush breakfasts, bush fishing, and open-air bush overnight stays around the campfire.
