Culinary Fishing Mongolia

A nine-day authentic culinary adventure trip to the Eg River in the steppe landscapes of northern Mongolia, where time seems to have stood still before human civilization. A pristine world of endless, untouched steppe and hill landscapes, crystal-clear, fish-rich rivers, and wild fauna and flora – the natural basis of life for the people living there, outside of civilization.

Northern Mongolia

N49° 41'–E102° 54'

This authentic culinary adventure begins with acclimatization in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, with an overnight stay at the 5* Shangrila Hotel, followed by a one-hour flight to Murun (Mörön) in the steppe the next day. From there, we continue by 4x4 off-road to our camp on the Eg River in the Teshig region of Bulgan Province , where we will spend five days in the relaxing solitude and wild beauty of virtually untouched nature – without any telephone or internet reception (satellite phone available).

Our area is called “Emt” by the indigenous nomads and is located about 80 km south of the Mongolian-Russian border with Siberia and Lake Baikal, the largest drinking water lake in the world.

Mongolia is considered one of the world's absolute insider tips among anglers. Our river camp is located directly on one of Mongolia's three top fishing waters, the crystal-clear Eg River . This river is one of the most sought-after fishing grounds for the prehistoric taimen , the largest member of the salmonid family of salmon, trout, and grayling.

Save the Taimen

Our Mongolian friends and partners Ese and Ganbat are the driving force behind the Taimen conservation program ("save the taimen") to preserve this magnificent fish. With "Mongolian Outdoor Outfitters," they are professionally committed to protecting Mongolian nature and waters and preserving Mongolia's extraordinary fish diversity, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. Taimen may only be caught "catch and release" ; after the fight, they are "kissed" and carefully released – catch, kiss, and release only.

Steppe Camp

Overnight accommodation at the camp is simple Mongolian style, with single or double occupancy in yurt-like wooden huts. These wooden huts are traditionally heated with wood, and a generator provides electricity. The river camp consists of five wooden huts , a cooking, dining, and lounge hut with a terrace, a separate hut with toilet, washing, and shower facilities including a sauna (western standard, super clean, camp-style, and well-maintained), a fire pit, and an outdoor cooking and dining area.

In the land of the eternally blue sky, daytime temperatures in July/August are 20-25°C, while nighttime temperatures are usually between 10-15°C.

Outdoor Cooking

Throughout the entire trip, we celebrate the hearty, primal cuisine and traditional food preparation methods of the Mongolian nomads. Hot sun, icy cold, grasslands. Whitewater, sand, forest, and rocks are always present. The cuisine is fundamentally very simple, yet refreshingly raw. It is never raw, but always influenced by the natural environment in which the nomads find themselves.

The preparation methods are influenced by over 5,000 years of horse-riding culture . The meat is usually boiled, and the original, savory flavor is extracted in broths. Mongolian culture is considered the cradle of the "hot pot," which we will celebrate in both its traditional and more modern versions.

In addition to the traditional preparation of whole goats and sheep with glowing river stones , "Khorkhot" and "Bodoog," tasty yak and marmot meat are also on the menu. We will also experience traditional nomadic dishes such as "Tsuivan" (noodles with lamb or beef) or "Khushuur" (pastry filled with minced meat) in a workshop with the camp cook Tsatsaa.
