"Authentic Southwest Africa"

Twelve-day authentic culinary adventure tour through South West Africa , perhaps the most fascinating region in Africa – the cradle of humanity.

Roland, a proven expert on the culture and the region for three decades, will guide you authentically and above all traditionally culinary on open wood fires from Cape Town through the South African semi-desert plateau Tankwa-Karoo to a private game, cattle and sheep farm in the South of Namibia and back along the Orange River through the diamond fields and Namaqualand along the west coast back to Cape Town

The cradle of humanity

Karoo & Kalahari

The itinerary initially takes us to our first camp in the Tankwa Karoo for two nights and then continues with an overnight stay in the “Waterfall Camp” near the Augrabies Falls , where the Kalahari and Nama Karoo deserts meet and the Orange River transforms the stone deserts into fertile oases.

Tankwa Tented Camp

In the Tankwa Karoo, we spend two nights at the Tankwa Tented Camp, located in the heart of the Stonehenge Game Reserve. It is the driest and least populated area of South Africa. The wooden huts are simple, clean , and in a simply African style, all with en-suite shower/toilet.

The camp bar is legendary!

Breakfast is served in the shady camphouse amidst the seemingly endless expanse of the Karoo desert. It includes a traditional breakfast, hearty meals, eggs cooked over a wood fire, homemade bread, coffee, tea, and juice. Lunch and dinner are also celebrated authentically on the spacious campground, shaded by the trees, around open fires in the desert boma, a fire pit protected from wildlife .

The cradle of humanity

Khoi and San

Namibia and the entire southwest of Africa unite many cultures in its vast landscapes. Their languages are English, Ovambo, Herero, Nama, Afrikaans and also German. This same diversity and originality is reflected in the cuisine. During “Authentic Southwest” we celebrate the traditional southwest African way of life, which is very much influenced by the colonialists and the indigenous peoples of southern Africa, the Khoi and San. We prepare our “food” like the “Bushmen” (the San), mainly on open wood fires , “braai” as the South Africans call it. A “braai” is much more than just preparing meat, fish and vegetables on open wood fires, it is almost a philosophy; it is an event where people come together in a relaxed atmosphere, sit or stand, chat, eat and drink together. There is time, lots of time! If you want to understand the South West, you have to understand "braai." It is the soul of South West Africans and expresses their essence. A traditional "braai" begins with lighting a fire and preparing embers on which to grill, cook, and roast.

Wonders of nature

Respect & Distance

...and yet still up close. The Fifth Quarter team is equipped with a HIKmicro Habrok Pro HX60LN thermal imaging camera , night vision goggles , and binoculars at all camps. This means you'll experience animal sightings not only during the day, but also during natural, unobserved behavior in the pitch-dark of night. The thermal binoculars make animals visible even in daylight when we can't see them with the naked eye due to their natural camouflage.

South Africa-Namibia

Orange River

We continue north across the Namibian border towards Grunau in the Karas Region to our base camp on a 12,800-hectare private game, cattle, and sheep farm in the semi-desert of southern Namibia, near the Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world. We'll stay here for four nights, absorbing the unique natural beauty with a deep dive into a traditional game farm, a mountain wilderness walk, a game drive, and authentic wilderness lunches, dinners, and campfires.

"Desert Camp"

12,800 ha traditional meat farm "Florida" in southern Namibia

Through Roland's 30-year network in sustainable agriculture, you'll experience the authentic South West African mentality, way of life, and culture against the backdrop of spectacular natural beauty and its virtually untouched flora and truly wild fauna. Absolute silence, endless expanses, sandy roads and open semi-desert landscapes, rugged mountain ranges millions of years old, extinct volcanoes, dried-up riverbeds, breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, wildly romantic wood fires, and the inspiring mysticism of South West Africa bring grounding and relaxation on all levels.

our desert camp

The meat farm

In Namibia, we spend three nights on one of the largest game, sheep, and cattle farms, located at an altitude of 1,200 meters in the south of the country near Grunau. In 2011, Neil du Toit merged the Swartstormlaagte, Ur, Florida, and Meimering farms by purchasing 12,800 hectares of farmland and has been managing them ever since, raising various antelope species, sheep, and Bonsmara cattle.

The rooms are simple, clean and authentically "farm style", all with en suite bathroom/WC and fan, so that each participant can retreat to his or her own privacy. Breakfast is served in the open air with a view of the surrounding farm's own mountain ranges, which are up to 1,700 m high. Fresh fruit, Namibian farm-made antelope biltong and droewors, eggs from the wood fire, coffee, tea, juice and, of course, individual requests from the guests are available.

Meat farm in Namibia

Farmer's workshop

At the meat farm of Roland's oldest African friend, Niel, butchering an antelope or wild boar is one of the authentic highlights of our trip. We carve steaks, roast cuts, and make "boerewors" and "droewors," both national dishes of southwest Africa.

Desert lifestyle

Leg of lamb in the riverbed

In the dried-up riverbed, we celebrate the authentic preparation of a leg of lamb under the Namibian starry sky.

Our River Camp

on the Orange River

In southern Namibia, we continue through the Fish River Canyon to the legendary Orange River. We cross the border into South Africa and spend two nights with our friends, the owners Stephnie & Dirk, at the " Frontier River Camp" on the Orange River. In the open kitchen of their private home, passionate cook Stephnie celebrates traditional South African cuisine that is second to none. An absolute highlight for every foodie.

All camp accommodations have air conditioning and a fan, as well as en-suite bathrooms. Afterwards, we continue south to the west coast of South Africa.

our beach camp

on the west coast

After the intense desert experiences of the last few days, we spend two nights at the Grootvlei beach camp near Lambertsbaai , right on the Atlantic Ocean. Here, seafood and fresh fish cooked over an open wood fire are on the menu. After a late breakfast on the third day, we continue south toward Veldrif , enjoying a west-coast lunch at the Bokkomlaan and spending the last evening on a private farm in Stellenbosch with a farewell outdoor cooking workshop.
