Bush Photography Camp

Balule in the heart of Limpopo

"Bush Photography Camp"

For 7 days, everything revolves around photography, wildlife, and authentic meals cooked over an open wood fire. This extraordinary journey to the banks of the mighty Olifants River, in northeastern South Africa near the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe, has been specially designed for hobby and amateur photographers: Under the photographic guidance of Johannes Arlt and accompanied by trained and experienced field guides, we explore the bush every day. Game drives in a safari jeep at sunrise, sunset on a boat safari on the Olifants River. Low-altitude helicopter flights over the wilderness and photo hides at the waterhole.

You’ll return with hearts full of memories and memory cards full of photos! (... and with full bellies)

The photographer

empathy in the picture

Johannes has a knack for infusing his images with natural charisma through an empathetic blend of momentum and perspective.

Without exception, his images are extraordinary.

Johannes & Roland

Larger than Life

Johannes has been accompanying Roland on his authentic culinary journeys since 2020, capturing these extraordinarily intense moments in striking photographs. Whether in the Mongolian steppe, the Namibian desert, the South African bush, on the glaciers of Iceland, or in the solitude of the Finnish forests, in the wilderness of Transylvania, by mountain streams to be climbed in Slovenia, and even on a luxury catamaran off the Portuguese coast.... Johannes has a keen sense of empathy for people and situations; his images tell stories and convey emotions.

We experience life according to the rules of the wilderness!

The "field guides"

Professionals in the bush

Our highly trained, certified “field guides” are all native South Africans and speak fluent English and Afrikaans.

Bush Photography Camp

in the "photo-hide"

We spend a full day in the “photo hide,” a camouflaged photography hideout by the waterhole. It’s equipped with comfortable chairs and shelves for the cameras.

Photo-base-camp

Parson House

Our private, exclusive “Bush Photography Camp” is tucked away in the unfenced Balule Nature Reserve, right in the heart of the iconic “Big Five” habitat. Wild animals roam the immediate surroundings and cross paths with our camp life and game drives day and night—by open-top jeep, boat, and helicopter.

A change of perspective

Game drives in an open-top jeep at sunrise and sunset. One person per row of seats ensures the best stability... and every animal sighting is on the right side.

The Fifth Quarter Style

Bush Cooking

Outdoor cooking (braai) is the order of the day – meals are cooked almost exclusively over an open wood fire – even on the wooden boat on the mighty Olifants River! Traditionally, regional meat, game, fish and shellfish from the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic coast, and vegetables from local farms are prepared daily, all accompanied by a magnificent selection of wines from the Cape Wine Kingdom and South African fynbos gins.

Respect & Distance

...and yet still up close. The Fifth Quarter team is equipped with a HIKmicro Habrok Pro HX60LN thermal imaging camera , night vision goggles , and binoculars at all camps. This means you'll experience animal sightings not only during the day, but also during natural, unobserved behavior in the pitch-dark of night. The thermal binoculars make animals visible even in daylight when we can't see them with the naked eye due to their natural camouflage.
