The Fifth Quarter Style Safari

"Culinary Safari"

Seven-day bush safari in the legendary ‘Fifth Quarter style’ on the banks of the mighty Olifants River, in north-eastern South Africa, not far from the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Our private, exclusive bush camp is tucked away and unfenced in the Balule Nature Reserve, in the heart of the iconic ‘Big Five’ habitat. Wild animals roam freely through the wilderness and cross paths with our camp life and game drives day and night – in open jeeps and boats...

TFQ-Camp on the Olifants river

Parsons Hilltop

Our two camp sites are geographically located in the Parsons area – another unfenced part of Balule.

Our camp is situated directly on the Olifants River, which flows all year round and is therefore vital for the survival of fauna and flora. Thanks to this continuous water supply, the camp and the surrounding biosphere reserve offer fascinating wildlife sightings in spectacular natural surroundings all year round. The camp deliberately has no fences, and wild animals roam the campsite as part of their natural habitat – day and night.

wonders of nature

respect & distance

... and yet so close. The Fifth Quarter team is equipped with HIKmicro Habrok Pro HX60LN thermal imaging cameras, night vision devices and binoculars at all camps. This means you can observe animals not only during the day, but also in their natural, unobserved behaviour in the pitch-dark night. The thermal binoculars make animals visible even in daylight when we cannot see them with the naked eye due to their natural camouflage.

Parsons Hilltop

The camps run by our South African partners and friends Mirjam & Robert are not only a place dedicated to nature conservation and protecting the habitat of animals in South Africa, but also a culinary hideaway in the middle of the South African wilderness. Here, the soul slows down and the body recharges its batteries.

Bush Fishing

Tiger fish – an experience for anyone who dares, whether they are non-anglers or passionate fishermen. Fishing in the Olifants River and its tributary, the Salati River, is an exciting adventure. Not only does the tiger fish have large incisors, it also shares its natural habitat with enormous crocodiles and hippos. Those who don't like fishing can enjoy the untamed beauty of the wilderness in the warmth of the campfire with a drink and a snack, or enjoy the passing scenery and its native inhabitants from the boat.

We experience life according to the rules of the wilderness.

Braai Boat

On the ‘Kambaku II’, our braai boat, we observe the wild animals from the Olifants River.

Chilled wine, ice-cold beer, South African fynbos gins, tonic and, of course, brandy and Coke, the national drink of the Afrikaners – everything is on board. Roland prepares snacks in The Fifth Quarter style over a wood fire, breakfast or a complete braai feast during the night boat safari.

Bush Cooking

Outdoor cooking, known as ‘braai’, is the order of the day – meals are prepared almost exclusively over an open wood fire – even on the wooden boat on the mighty Olifants River! Traditionally prepared regional meat, game, fish and shellfish from the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic coast, vegetables from local farms are served daily, all accompanied by a magnificent variety of wines from the Cape Wine Kingdom and South African fynbos gins.
