Nils Busch
Nils Busch handcrafts knives for hunting, fishing, cooking and other purposes. What began as a hobby quickly developed into a passion. Learning and mastering old techniques and implementing them in modern designs is both an inspiration and a challenge for Nils. That is why he uses carbon steel, local woods, horn and fossil materials for most of his knives. The patina that such a knife acquires as a result of the steel tarnishing is not a flaw, but rather testifies to the high value of the tool. In his small forge right next to Lübeck's Holstentor, Nils Busch produces unique knives that are forged exclusively by hand. His knives are individually tailored to each customer. These are knives whose shape and steel composition are tailored to the personality of the user. The ‘The Fifth Quarter’ kitchen cleaver “Thor” is specially designed to meet Roland's ‘hard core’ needs and is used by him in a wide variety of climates, in heat, ice, snow, on the water, in the jungle, in the forest and in the desert. Roland uses it to cut up whole animals, scale fish and chop chillies and dill. Nils classified Roland as a ‘destroyer’ type and created this ‘Thor’ kitchen cleaver. Every other cooking axe is also unique – no two are alike. ‘Thor’ is the son of Odin, the father of the gods. He was worshipped by farmers as the god of vegetation and by sailors as the god of weather. In the mythological writings of the Edda, he was the protector of Midgard, the world of humans.
